Leveraging on the acceleration of Digital Transformation to be Naturally Smarter
Are we, as humans, smarter than gnus?
Do we take advantage of seasonal climate geographic differences?
Can the acceleration of Digital Transformation due to COVID19 disruption help on that?
Gnus migrate twice a year to maximize food ingestion and they do it massively to minimize risks of being haunted by crocodiles and lions. That makes them to get satisfied, feel safe and live comfortably in The Serengeti. They are perfectly adapted to the environment and contributes to sustain it.
Economy and job opportunities are for humans like grass for the gnus. We had been migrating from villages to the cities and south to north in the last two centuries to get our grass and be satisfied but, do we really feel safer? do we live more comfortably? and, do that help to preserve our environment for the future in a sustainable way?
In the first 20 years of this century, as bigger are the cities and cheaper is flying, more and more people are moving from one side of the city to the other, one side of the country to the other or even one country to another to work, or just for pleasure, daily, weekly but, is that good for the humans themselves and the planet? is the increased carbon footprint sustainable? is that naturally and economically smart?
Last week, I read three news that show how the world is quickly changing because of COVID-19 disruption and accelerating Digital Transformation for Employees and Customers:
- ING Bank decided to implement telework for 100% employees
- Inditex ZARA plans to close 1,200 shops and invest a thousand of million euros in the online business and digitalization
- the top 3 Spanish Communications Service Providers offer unlimited mobile data subscriptions packs for less than 50€/month
If we can work, shop, stay socially connected and enjoy from our “mobile digital homes”, does it make sense to keep living in the very expensive and crowded big cities all the time? does it make sense to move daily from one part of the city to another or weekly from one country to another to work?
Wouldn’t it be more efficient from economic, time, energy and even entertainment point of view to live in a village close to the beach, in the mountain or even in another country, wherever you like more, a big portion of your time or at least for some long periods from time to time taking advantage of the anticyclic human migrations and trends?
If you are a Nordic citizen and your company allows teleworking, you could decide to move to south sunny Spain in winter for 1 or 2 months; you could work remotely; your daily cost of life would decrease significantly; the energy required to travel and the flight carbon emissions would be compensated by the savings of not heating your home in the cold north; also you could take advantage of less crowded tourist attractions in winter and use weekends to visit them, go to the beach or practice outdoor sports.
Similarly, a Spanish worker could decide to rent a flat in one of the empty Nordics capitals in July and use it as a base to visit fjords and Baltic sea saving air conditioning in hot Spanish cities downtowns.
Overall, if we migrate more on winters to the south and the beaches and stay more in summer in the north and mountains, wouldn’t we be more environment friendly and naturally smarter, like gnus!
Where you live and where you work are not tied anymore thanks to the Digital Transformation so, take advantage of it, plan the migration seasonal path that fits better with you and enjoy the planet becoming naturally smarter!
